Equity and Inclusion

Ensuring we learn and thrive in a just and inclusive environment.

Justice will always be a work in progress. By promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, we seek to be at the forefront of that ongoing work within the field of education.

Institutional Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

A Choate Rosemary Hall education extends far beyond the academic curriculum. At Choate we value integrity, compassion, and respect; thus, injustice and inequity undermine our individual character and collective mission...

...We acknowledge that our School did not begin as a community open to students of all backgrounds, identities, and beliefs. While we have made significant progress to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion within our community presently, we are committed to this work in perpetuity.

The common good and our shared future depend on what we do every day individually, collectively, and institutionally. Our School manifests its commitment to justice by supporting and educating students; supporting and training adults; and equipping students and adults alike to build authentic understanding across differences. Justice will always be a work in progress. By promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, we seek to be at the forefront of that ongoing work within the field of education.

Our dedication to diversity means we are proud to welcome and affirm perspectives that recognize the full humanity of all community members.

Our dedication to equity means striving to cultivate a balance of fairness and inclusion. We encourage students and adults alike to find ways to leverage the privilege of their Choate education or employment to promote fairness for all.

And we foster inclusion through institutional practices and policies that promote a common sense of belonging, safety, responsibility, and empowerment for all members of our community.

Philosophy and Core Values

Choate’s Office of Equity and Inclusion continues to build upon the impressive groundwork of Driving Equity at Choate and the Choate Diversity Student Association, to develop a school-wide approach to diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence.

Since 1989, when the first Office of Multicultural Affairs was created, our commitment to diversity remains a core value of the School. Through day-to-day activities, curriculum, and school-wide celebrations, we seek to raise awareness and encourage understanding of differences of race, gender, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic class, geographical origin, and sexual orientation.
